The National Historic Site of Signal Hill, which overlooks the entrance to the port and offers a 360-degree panorama of the town, harbour, and sea, is the primary destination for tourists to Signal Hill. The Visitor Centre's Signal Hill and the harbour are excellent sites to learn about the history and significance of this, as well as the ruins of Queen's Battery, which was built in 1700.
National Historic Site of Cape Spear Lighthouse
On the magnificent cliffs immediately southeast of St. John's, the oldest and most surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland marks Cape Spear, North America's most eastern point. The 1836 lighthouse was built in the centre of the keeper's residence and was renovated to show how a lighthouse keeper lived in the nineteenth century. This was the residence of the same family for 150 years, when the Cantwells struggled to ensure that the light that sailed safely around the cape was passed on to the next generation.
